Applied externally to slabs & Walls, resistant to positive hydrostatic pressure, Applied internally, resistant to negative hydrostatic pressures. These barrier types externally are typically sheet & liquid applied membranes where appropriate, cement based products can also be applied externally & internally providing resistance to both positive & negative hydrostatic pressures.
Type B barrier protection comes from the structure itself, typically constructed of reinforced concrete and designed in accordance with current BS EN 1992/1993
Type C Waterproofing protection manages water that penetrates the structure, managing any ingress to a suitable discharge point. External elements of the structure should be capable of controlling the rates of water ingress so not to exceed the capabilities of the cavity drain system.
A combination of Type A, B & C barrier in any configuration being either two or three lines of protection is a consideration where the assessed risks to a project, and the consequences of failure deemed are too high.
